DATABIOMIX

Microbiome intelligence · Switzerland

The intelligence layer for microbiome diagnostics in gut health.

Your clients/patients are already asking about the microbiome. Add it to your practice, without adding to your workload.

In one line

DATABIOMIX builds a microbiome interpretation SaaS for personalized nutrition and gut health professionals.

Proof

First commercial deployment with a leading accredited Swiss diagnostic lab.

02Opportunity

Microbiome testing is arriving in everyday practice.

Sequencing costs are falling, results are getting faster, and the analytical power of microbiome data keeps growing. We are convinced that microbiomics will become a standard in routine diagnostics across clinics and practices.

Sequencing has become affordable

What used to be a research budget item is now within reach of routine testing.

Clients are already asking

Direct-to-consumer kits made the gut microbiome a mainstream topic — and left the interpretation to the practitioner.

Practitioners hold the relationship

Nutritionists, longevity clinics and holistic centers are where dietary change is actually planned, followed up and sustained.

03Problem

The data exists.The insights don’t.

Microbiota analyses come with complex data interpretation, a lack of standardization and guidelines on deliverable endpoints. That makes it hard to reach an actionable answer in a reasonable time frame.

Logistics take time from client care

Ordering kits and shipping them to clients adds administrative work to every case.

Out-of-pocket cost, uncertain return

Clients pay for the test themselves, but practitioners can’t be sure it will add value to the consultation.

Findings do not translate into a meal plan

Reports list bacterial taxa but don’t turn them into the nutrients and ingredients a meal plan needs.

Interpretation without expert support

Practitioners are left alone with the report. They have little time to interpret it, and no specialist to answer follow-up questions.

Dr. Marco Meola

CEO & Founder

As Founder and Chief Executive Officer, I lead the organizational and administrative functions while remaining actively involved in microbiome research projects.

My academic journey began with a background in Earth Sciences and Molecular Biology from the University of Fribourg, driven by a desire to integrate these fields. I pursued my doctoral studies in environmental microbiology at ETH Zurich, where I developed expertise in combining fieldwork, wet-lab techniques, and bioinformatics to study the resistance and resilience of microbial communities in periglacial soils.

After completing my Ph.D., I broadened my research focus to include various applications of microbiomics. I conducted postdoctoral work at Agroscope on cheese microbiomes and at the University Hospital in Basel on clinical microbiomics. I then joined the Institute of Medical Microbiology at the University of Zurich, where I helped clinical research groups uncover important correlations between the microbiome and diseases, drug efficacy, and side effects.

As part of the co-founding team of PharmaBiome AG, I bring over 15 years of experience in microbiomics, gained in both academic and accredited clinical settings.

Dr. Matthias Dreier

Lead Bioinformatician & Cloud Engineer

As Lead Bioinformatician and Cloud Engineer, I oversee the management and optimization of our bioinformatics and cloud computing infrastructure.

With a strong foundation in bioinformatics, I bring both ambition and dedication to advancing the field. My academic journey began with a Master’s degree in Molecular Life Sciences, specializing in Biochemistry, from the University of Bern. This comprehensive training equipped me with deep expertise in cell biology and biochemistry. I further honed my skills during my Ph.D. at the University of Neuchâtel, where I developed SpeciesPrimer, an innovative PCR primer design pipeline, now available on GitHub, that significantly simplifies the design process for quantitative PCR primers targeting bacteria.

In recent years, my professional focus has expanded into microbiome research, particularly in the context of cheese microbiology at Agroscope. Here, I have developed several bioinformatics tools and gained extensive experience in reproducible data analysis.

My mission is to enhance the efficiency of data analysis for scientists, removing technical barriers so they can focus on advancing their research.

Mohan Vamsi Adluru

AI Product Engineer

As AI Product Engineer, I build the platform’s core infrastructure, evaluate its AI systems and shape how we ship software — from requirements to production.

I trained as a computer scientist and spent three years at Lumel Technologies, rising from trainee to Associate Product Developer. I took end-to-end ownership of 9 of the 16 Power BI visuals in the xViz suite — shipped at enterprise scale and part of its Microsoft AppSource certification — cut front-end rendering latency by 35%, and resolved more than 300 production issues. During my studies, I published research on adversarial attacks in deep reinforcement learning at IEEE ICMLA 2021.

I came to Switzerland for an M.Sc. in Applied Computational Life Sciences at ZHAW, to bring software engineering to biology and health. My thesis, carried out at DATABIOMIX, built an agentic AI pipeline that turns scientific publications into a traceable knowledge base.

Alongside, I have built AI products end to end — a food-tech mobile app MVP for Eatomics, and now an AI nutrition coach for teenagers at ETH Juniors — won 2nd place at the ZHAW × Roche Hackathon 2025, and served as technical lead at ZHAW’s HealthTech Summer School.

What I bring to DATABIOMIX is the bridge between research and product: AI that is rigorously evaluated, auditable, and built to run in production — so the science behind every recommendation can be trusted.

08Q&A

Questions we get asked.

Who is this built for?

Nutritionists and dietitians, longevity clinics, and holistic or integrative practices that already work with diet and gut health.

What resolution do the results have?

Species-level taxonomic resolution, produced by validated and automated bioinformatics pipelines against curated reference databases.

Who does the laboratory work?

Sample handling, DNA extraction and sequencing run at a leading accredited Swiss diagnostic laboratory. DATABIOMIX takes over from the sequencing data onward.

Do I need bioinformatics knowledge to use it?

No. The web app is the interpretation layer — it takes the analysis output and presents it as findings and dietary recommendations you can use in a consultation.

Can I compare a client’s results over time?

Our digital web app allows you to easily track the various endpoints over time. No longer searching through a pile of PDF sheets.

How long does a result take?

Turnaround time is a maximum of 14 days, from the arrival of the sample to the report.

Is this a medical device or a diagnostic claim?

The web app is not a medical device just yet. No diagnostic claims will be done, just gut health assessments based on endpoints available from scientific literature due to the lack of internationally accepted guidelines.

What happens to my clients’ data?

Clients’ data are protected according to GDPR and hosted in Switzerland.
